What's Next?

The latest flap regarding the SWVEA has settled down. There has been no further word about it. Here's hoping that those in charge got the word that what they did was illegal and unethical.

It is time to get back on track and follow our own constitution. What moves can be done? One of the articles of the constitution calls for several standing committees to appointed by December of each year. Three of these committees are the Audit Committee, the Budget Committee and the Nominating Committee. It's time to institute these committees and have the books audited, have an adequate appropriate budget developed and candidates (several per office if possible) nominated. The Nominating Committee is needed because elections have gotten off-track and for some reason are being held in even years instead of odd years as called for in the constitution. Officers need to be elected to complete the current term, then an election needs to be held in the odd year to get back on track. In some instances officers have been in office for more than the "a consecutive term" called for in the constitution.

Members should be encouraged to attend Vermont's Representative Assembly in Rutland. Indeed, officers should go. They've never been and it's a shame. It is our union's democracy in action.

Also, did you see where Burr and Burton's teachers voted to freeze their salaries? I think that was very short-sighted. Burr and Burton has spent and spent and spent in order to grow this mega-program and they have spent themselves out of the market. Now the teachers are taking that debt on their backs.
